30+ Years of Educational Impact
The Nigerian Breweries – Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund was established in 1994 by Nigerian Breweries Plc to advance education in Nigeria. Originally founded as the Nigerian Breweries Education Trust Fund, the Trust Fund reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to strengthening access to quality education as a catalyst for national development.
For over thirty (30) years, the Trust Fund has invested in initiatives that empower students, educators, and learning communities across the country. Guided by the belief that education remains one of the most powerful tools for sustainable development, the ETF continues to create opportunities that enable individuals and institutions to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
From 1994 to Today
The Beginning
The Nigerian Breweries Education Trust Fund was established with a seed capital of ₦100 million representing a bold commitment to education as a driver of national development. This wasn’t a one-time gesture. It was the foundation for 30 years of sustained, strategic investment in Nigeria’s educational future.
Honoring Vision
The Fund was renamed “The Nigerian Breweries – Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund” in honor of Elder Felix Ohiwerei, a visionary leader whose passion for education, leadership, and community development continues to inspire our mission and values. This renaming wasn’t ceremonial—it was a commitment to carry forward his legacy of transforming lives through education.
Scaling Impact
The Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition was launched, aligning our efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). This flagship initiative would go on to become the face of the Fund’s commitment to recognizing and elevating teaching excellence. We believed then—and know now—that when you celebrate teachers, you transform systems.
Multiplying Returns
Over 30 years of strategic deployment and reinvestment have enabled us to compound our impact. ₦100 million in 1994 continues to generate resources for education today. 2,411 teachers have been recognized. 429 classrooms have been built. 74+ communities have been transformed. This is what sustained, disciplined investment looks like.
Our Impact and programs
Our strategy rests on recognizing that quality education requires three interlocking elements:
Recognizing Excellence
We identify and celebrate teachers and educators who demonstrate outstanding commitment to educational quality and innovation. Recognition creates ripple effects, inspiring entire systems of educators to elevate their practice.
Building Infrastructure
Quality education requires quality facilities. We invest in classrooms, laboratories, and libraries that create conducive learning environments where students can thrive.
Empowering Educators & Communities
We support capacity building, career guidance, and research initiatives that strengthen teaching and learning across Nigeria’s educational ecosystem.
